Record Of The Day: the Iguanas- “Mona” / “Don’t Know Why” 45
Ever heard of Iggy Pop? Yeah, exactly, that guy that played Nona’s father on the Adventures of Pete & Pete. OK… enough with that. Iggy is well known as the godfather of punk rock but before he was “Iggy”, the front man for the Stooges, he was James Osterberg, the drummer for the blues/garage band, the Iguanas. Were talking early 60s here. This 45 is Iggy’s first appearance on record. Pretty cool.
FUN FACT: James was actually nicknamed “Iggy” by his boss at a record shop. Iggy is short for iguana. Get it?
Released 1964 via Forte Recordings

Adventures of Pete & Pete-style Iggy:
Looney Tunes Records
I knew that Looney Tunes was supposedly moving (to Allston Village?) so I can’t say that I was shocked to see an empty/dusty shop when walking down Boylston Street. If anything, my thoughts on the matter hover between neutrality and stern disinterest.
All I know for certain is that record shops have been steadily going out of business for about a decade now. The Metro Boston record mecca of yesteryear is nothing more than a memory at this point. I never thought I’d say this but… I’m starting to feel nostalgia for the 90s.
Shops that are actually still in business (as far as I know):
Planet Records, Harvard Sq, Cambridge
Armageddon Shop, Harvard Sq, Cambridge
Cheapo Records, Central Sq, Cambridge
In Your Ear Records, BU, Boston
In Your Ear Records, Harvard Sq, Cambridge
Nuggets, Kenmore Sq, Boston
Orpheus, South End, Boston
Skippy Whites, Egleston Square, Roxbury
Somerville Grooves, Union Sq, Somerville
Stereo Jacks, North Cambridge
Underground Hip Hop, South End, Boston
Weirdo Records, Central Sq, Cambridge
The Hundreds x The Seventh Letter
Dope short feature from my favorite artist who isn’t Salty Dave or Bert Krak… the one and only Revok.
This collaboration should be pretty intense. Anything from the 7th Letter/AWRMSK guys is always dope, and The Hundreds certainly know what’s they’re doing as well.
Watch this if you are starting your own company
This is it – good product and creating your own market space.

Quasar- The Hardcore Sessions
Alright. I’m sure there are loads of tributes and mixtapes in the works and that’s really cool but… I’m the DJ that compiled a mix of the punk rock stuff for your enjoyment. Just doing my job. Enjoy!

Record of the Day: Beastie Boys- “Check Your Head”
More than just another “record of the day”… more like one of the very few records that helped form my musical taste. Check Your Head is definitely THEE record that taught me how to celebrate musical diversity. The timing couldn’t have been better for my young/fragile brain. I bought my copy at Strawberries in the Watertown Mall just after my 13th birthday in September of ’92. I remember immediately throwing away my busted cassette dub that had been steadily deteriorating for months. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years.
The reasoning for today’s selection is anything but a mystery… Adam Yauch is gone and that really bums me out. The dude that SINGLE HANDEDLY got me into bass guitar as a 12 year old kid is gone forever. R.I.P. Adam Yauch.
New Teenage Bottlerocket LP and Tour
Teenage Bottlerocket bassist, Miguel Chen says:
“Friends! We are beyond excited to announce our new full length Freak Out! The record comes out in July on Fat Wreck Chords and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it! These songs are some of our favorites we’ve ever done. We recorded it at the Blasting Room with our long time friend and engineer Andrew Berlin and we’re stoked on how everything turned out. It’s been over 10 years since Teenage Bottlerocket began and a lot of amazing things have happened since then. We are so grateful to everyone who has helped make our life so awesome and we hope you enjoy the record as much as we enjoyed making it!!”
The boys are embarking upon an extensive North American tour this summer. I can only find a few dates as of right now. The important thing is, the Massachusetts show has been announced! I’m assuming the huge gap between the Albuquerque and Cambridge shows will be announced very shortly.

Red Hook Summer
Nice! Just what this summer needed – a new Spike Lee Joint. Looks like Red Hook Summer is going to be a return to true Spike Lee-style location filming in Brooklyn. I’ve read that this is a sequel of sorts to Do The Right Thing, but that remains to be seen. I’m going to try to catch this one in the theatre Hopefully it plays at Davis Square so I can enjoy a few cold ones during the showing.
Chuuwee TUS “Crown Me King”
New mixtape from Chuuwee TUS straight outta Sacramento, California…. get it here
You will be seeing more of Chuuwee on this site soon.
Record Of The Day: Jeff the Brotherhood- “We Are The Champions”
Jeff the Brotherhood successfully combine a blasting Ramones-style force (GREAT starting point) with a crunchy guitar tone not unlike 90s-era Weezer. Imagine loads of 8th note hi-hats and downstroke riffage married with spaced out stoner rock guitar solos. This is Jeff the Brotherhood. OK, how about this… Imagine the first Queens of the Stone Age record but with a massive bubblegum sensibility. Get it yet?
These guys are great and they’re playing @ TT the Bear’s on June 21st. Get hip!
Released 2011 via Infinity Cat Recordings
